An asphalt shingle has a rough and abrasive texture (similar to 60 grit sandpaper) creating lots of surface area for rain and snow to cling to. As a result an asphalt shingle will hold water until it trickles off or evaporates. As well an asphalt shingle will hold snow until it melts or blows off. A steel roof sheds water and snow. The Superior Steel Roofing System roof uses galvanized steel which has a stylish and durable Granite Deep Mat finish (see GDM PDF). The GDM finish is an organic coated steel with a standard paint thickness of 35 to 40 microns. It is a textured low gloss pre-coated steel made specifically for roofing which gives a consistent appearance from any angle or position and adds to the water and snow shedding abilities of the roof. Because the GDM finish has a slight texture to it (similar to 400 grit sandpaper), moisture and snow do not have anything to hold on to. This means that during warmer weather rain can run off the roof and during the winter snow will slide off the roof.

The GDM finish on a Superior Steel Roofing Systems roof is a colourfast product. It has a lifetime fade factor of no more than 5 to 8 percent over 40 years with present testing. A painted product will fade as much as 50 percent in a shorter time. The sun is getting more intense every year; so which would you rather have protecting your home? A paint based product that offers no UV protection or an engineered GDM product which is formulated to offer UV protection. All steel will expand and contract with extreme heat and cold. Cured paint is a rigid finish; it is not designed to allow for expansion and contraction. Steel expansion and contraction can lead to the paint cracking and chipping. The GDM coating on a Superior Steel Roofing Systems roof remains flexible because it never fully cures and so the GDM coating can expand and contract with the steel. This prevents the problems of cracking and chipping. There are a lot of environmental factors besides the sun that can affect a roof. When a Superior Steel Roofing Systems roof is installed it will not appear shiny like some of the other products on the market.

Asphalt shingles absorb UV radiation and radiate this energy into your house as heat for many hours after the sun has gone down. Steel has a wonderful quality when it comes to the issue of heat: steel reflects UV radiation. The reflective value of the steel and GDM finish combined with the air space created by the cross strapping system actually reduces the amount of heat being transferred into the home. Air flow – between the steel and existing roof – removes warm air before heat can be transferred into the home. As well, the new steel roof shades the asphalt shingles from the sun. After the steel roof is installed the old roofing shingles no longer absorb the sun’s radiation; the shingles now become an extra layer of insulation from the sun’s heat.
